Apollon fight back to stun Apoel and lift Super Cup

Cyprus cup holders Apollon continued their superiority over Apoel by beating the Cyprus champions 2-1 to lift the Super Cup on Wednesday night in the season curtain-raiser, extending their unbeaten streak against the Nicosia giants to seven matches.

With both sides prioritising next week’s crucial Champions League and Europa League playoff ties, Apoel’s Giorgos Efrem scored the opening goal of the game after only eight minutes of Wednesday’s match at the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium in Larnaca.

Apollon were the better side, and despite the dismissal of Giorgos Vasiliou to two yellow cards after 71 minutes for a hard tackle on Minas Antoniou, Alex da Silva equalised for the Larnaca side seven minutes later with a thunderous long-range effort, with Andre Schembri hitting the winner three minutes from time to give Apollon a second straight Super Cup title – both against Apoel.
