Nicosia mayor pushes for summer school expansion

Nicosia mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis visited a state summer school and the municipal swimming pool on Monday to have a closer look at the services offered to the capital’s residents.

Yiorkadjis’ first stop was the elementary school of Ayioi Omologites where the municipality’s summer school programme is being implemented.

The programme has been running for five years and caters for more than 300 children going to primary schools of Ayioi Omologites, Ayios Andreas and Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios and vulnerable families and students of the Aglandjia special school.

Yiorkadjis said the increasing demand has led to moves to expand the programme to new school units and for municipalities to pressure the education ministry to expand summer school hours and to help working parents, especially single-parents or parents with many children.

The mayor then visited the municipal swimming pool where he had the opportunity to see how the special lift operates that help people with disabilities in and out of the pool.

The lift, the municipality said, is on loan from the Cyprus Sports Organisation (CSO) to help swimming pool visitors with disabilities. The lift will be at the swimming pool every summer season, between May and end of September, when the pool closes down for the winter.

According to the municipality the lift has already helped many visitors to the swimming pool.
