Fire out of control in north

Firefighters in the north are trying to put out a fire that broke out at around noon today in a picnic area in Kapouti near Morphou and is moving towards the Maronite village of Kormakitis.

Two helicopters from the British Bases were helping the fire-fighting, while an aircraft was expected to arrive from Turkey.

The fire broke out at around 12.30pm in a picnic site in the forest area of Kapouti but fire service crews were unable to control it because of strong winds. The fire is now spreading northwards in the direction of Kormakitis.
