Syllouris questions whether Turkey would respect future Cyprus agreement

House President Demetris Syllouris said on Sunday that it should be of concern to the Greek Cypriot side whether Turkey would respect any agreement in the future.

Speaking at a memorial service in Agridia, Syllouris said Turkey’s intransigence and its unwillingness to act for a solution of the Cyprus problem, should make the Greek Cypriot side more concerned.

“We must not forget the facts and the attitude of the Turkish invaders,” he said, especially at a time when the Turkish leadership has been showing an authoritative attitude.

“Since 1974 Turkey has not respected any agreement and it should concern us whether it will respect any agreement from now on,” he added.

Had Turkey responded to the efforts of the Greek Cypriot side, we would be more optimistic about the solution, Syllouris said.

Instead, he said: “Turkey`s priorities are the upgrading and strengthening of the puppet regime and the weakening and de-recognition of the Republic of Cyprus.”

Turkey was not showing any willingness to contribute to the solution efforts and had created a worse situation by threatening a “hot incident”, and violating Cyprus’ EEZ and the Aegean, and not complying with its EU obligations. “Its attitude already demonstrates its intentions,” he said.
