The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation is doing all it can to keep those in the capital entertained. Continuing with the Phaneromni Festival 2017 events, the cultural centre will screen the comedy Bridget Jones’s Diary on Wednesday and present the musical performance La La World. It will also run a summer school as of July for children from ten to 14-years-old.
On Wednesday the first instalment of the Bridget Jones trilogy, which came out in 2001, introduces Bridget, a British woman living in London who is determined to improve herself while she looks for love. As most of us do, at New Year she decides to put her life in order and write her goals in her new diary. The result is her having an affair with Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) who cheats on her, and then her realising that she is actually in love with uptight lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). The fight scene in this one could make you feel as if it is happening just around the corner as it takes place in a Greek restaurant. If you haven’t seen the next two, you will surely have your entertainment sorted for the next few days. Will she stick with Darcy? Will they get married and can the fight scenes get any better?
But the big event of the week is reserved for Thursday when music will take over. After the success of the performance by the female choir Cantus Novus Femina from Limassol together with the Concordia String Quartet last year in Limassol as part of the third Pancyprian Classical Music Youth Festival, the musicians are now ready to show Nicosia what they have got.
The choir and quartet will perform a new programme, specially put together for the Phaneromeni Festival 2017 for a string quartet and percussions. It will include well known pieces from Latin and North America, as well as Europe. The local quartet – Constantinos Demirtzoglou (1st violin), Viki Hadjiandreou (2nd violin), Nikolas Efthymiou (viola) and Doros Zisimos (cello) – will also talk about their performances by referring to poetry and other artistic elements, all with a pinch of humour.
The quartet has achieved a great artistic presence in Cyprus with several appearances at festivals, such as the festival for Music World Day in Molos, the second Annual Classical Music Youth Festival – CLAB U FEST – and the Festival of Nicosia.
Now for young people who are interested in Literature, the centre offer a summer school centred on Homer from July 3 to 21. The three sessions – July 3-7, July 10-14 and July 17-21 – will use the foundations exhibit’s to inspire participants to get creative. The daily programme will include creative translation of texts from Homer, creative writing based on Homeric epics and teaching of animation pixilation techniques. The aim is that at the end of each week, participants will have created their own short film inspired by themes in Homer’s writing.
