Women’s charity OWAAT-Cyprus adds Arabic and Yoruba to website

Domestic violence self-help charity One Woman At A Time (OWAAT) Cyprus has added Yoruba and Arabic languages to its website.

OWAAT founder Patricia M Martin said the additions “are for multimillions of abused women who otherwise are precluded from an easy, free web portal where they can know their human rights in their own language”.

The Yoruba and Arabic versions of the OWAAT website were made possible with the contribution of volunteers Todi Bankole from Nigeria and Sarah A from Saudi Arabia.

Courts, she said, must provide interpreters when vulnerable persons such as abused women say their human rights have been infringed. The European Court of Human Rights requires member states of the Council of Europe to offer special considerations and greater protections to prevent the abuse of such people.

The group believes that its Yoruba and Arabic versions will reach millions of Arabs and more than 170,000 Yoruba now living in European countries, members of the Council of Europe that are obliged to abide by the European Convention on Human Rights.

In addition to Yoruba and Arabic, OWAAT’s website is also available in Greek and English.
