Lidl to open 17th store shortly, touts contribution to economy

Supermarket giant Lidl said on Wednesday that in the past year alone, the chain had contributed directly and indirectly to 1,460 jobs, partnered with 280 suppliers and added €84.5 million to the Cypriot economy.

Lidli revealed the numbers during a presentation of its first socio-economic study. It also announced that it would be soon opening its 17th store to be located in Mouttayiaka, Limassol. It is also working on substantially extending its central warehouse in Dromoloxia with the aim of controlling the quality of products which need to be kept in a cool environment.

The socio-economic study which was carried out with the support of Ernest & Young Greece covered the period March 2015 until end of February 2016.

According to the study, the direct and indirect contribution to the job market during this period was 1,460 jobs which is 0.4 per cent of total employment. Of those, 446 were directly employed by the chain.

The company added €84.5 million corresponding to 0.5 per cent of GDP in Cyprus.

Lidl locally partnered with 280 suppliers with overall purchases reaching a total of €47.3 million, €32.8 million of which were for retail market products.

It also left a footprint for social initiatives worth more than €50,000, it said. During the past six years, Lidl has supported gifted children, the anti-cancer society, foodbanks and others.

Chairman of the board Iacovos Andreanides who was at the presentation said Lidl pledges to continue to strive to support the local market and create new job openings.

All the meat, a large amount of fruits, vegetables and dairy products is local, he said, adding that another 20 new Cypriot products will shortly be added.

The chain also supports the environment, as customers have to pay for plastic bags. On Environment Day they offered free canvas bags which were introduced by the German-based chain to Cyprus.
