Motherhood captured in images and words

The bond between a mother and her children anywhere in the world is something that we can all understand. Bringing us face to face with such images is the ongoing exhibition Mothers and Children of the World which features photographs by Christina Drakos and essays and poems by educator and writer Xenia Tsolaki Metaxa.

The exhibition, which will run at Beat Pazar in Limassol until June 18, is put together by two artists and mothers for the children of the Free Hands’ programme in Limassol, which is supported by the Sagapo Children’s Foundation. The proceeds from the exhibition will go towards a scholarship fund for children from financially struggling families.

Drakos’ motive for the exhibition was to capture the sincere joy that emanates from certain people and to devote the exhibition to “maternal love and universal tenderness”.

This image of maternal love is completed by Metaxa’s essays and poems which capture moments from her personal journey of motherhood and encounters with children during her 30-year professional experience. She chose to take part in this project because she believes that “the beauty of the written word, intertwined with the immediacy of photography could come together to aesthetically please, but above all to sensitise an audience towards the contribution to a grand humanitarian cause”.
