New agreements with Russia in the pipeline

AS a result of the Cyprus-Russia bilateral contacts over the last 48 hours, the ground has been prepared for the signing of agreements in the fields of economy and education, as well as agreements on humanitarian issues, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said after a meeting with President Anastasiades in Nicosia.

The Russian official was speaking on the sidelines of the 127th ministerial session of the committee of ministers of the Council of Europe hosted on Friday in Nicosia.

Cyprus state broadcaster CyBC reported after the meeting which was held at noon at the presidential palace that bilateral relations and the Cyprus talks were also discussed.

According to CyBC, Lavrov said that nobody has the power to impose their own positions on the two communities. He also referred to the important role of the Security Council in this crucial period, while welcoming the presence of the new UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, who, as he stressed, was informed and showed interest in the Cyprus issue.

Earlier, President Anastasiades received the foreign ministers of Hungary and the Ukraine, Peter Szijjarto and Pavlo Klimkin, as well as the Deputy Foreign Minister of Germany, Michael Roth.
