Arrests after man electrocuted while allegedly stealing cables (Updated)

A heist in Paphos in the early hours of Thursday went bad for the burglars when one of them was electrocuted while trying to steal cables from a warehouse.

According to the police, the 27-year-old man had broken into a warehouse to steal electrical cables worth an estimated €20,000.

At one point he suffered an electric shock, and was later rushed to Paphos general hospital.

His condition was non-life threatening, police said. Guards were placed outside his hospital room.

The man, an Indian national, was placed under arrest.

Police also arrested a 30-year-old man, also from India. Under questioning, he admitted to the burglary as well as to two other burglaries at the same premises.

In the first instance, on March 9 of this year, he and his accomplices broke into the warehouse and stole cables worth €5,000.

The second time was on April 11, but the men took nothing.

The two men were expected to be placed under arrest for the previous instances as well, and are set to appear before a judge on Friday for their remand hearing.

Police were meanwhile seeking a third man, a 35-year-old Greek Cypriot.
