Nea Salamina take Famagusta derby

Nea Salamina were the big winners in the Famagusta derby on Friday as they came back from behind to defeat Anorthosis by 2-1.

Just before the half-hour mark Ruben Rayios gave Anorthosis a deserved lead but they failed to take advantage of their superiority and paid the ultimate price.

The enforced substitutions of Rayios and Shehou in quick succession unsettled Anorthosis, and 15 minutes from the end Nea Salamina equalised through last year’s top scorer Dimitar Makriev.

Five minutes later Nasir Maachi headed in the winner for Nea Salamina leaving Anorthosis rooted in tenth place and five points off a top six finish.

Apollon’s caretaker manager Sofronis Avgousti got off to a dream start as his team hit four past fellow Limassolians Aris.

Papoulis gave Apollon the lead with Angeli, da Silva and Piech also getting on the scoresheet.

Aris’ consolation goal was scored by Antoniou.

Karmiotissa missed the chance to move into the top six as they could only draw with AEZ in a pulsating game that finished 3-3.

Sassy had given AEZ the lead early in the game but first Stavrou and then Lokobe on the stroke of half-time, turned the game around for Karmiotissa.

Two penalties later, converted by Aurelio and Pangalos, and AEZ were back in front before Arocha salvaged a point for Karmiotissa with virtually the last kick of the game.
