Israeli sailors rescued

Two Israeli nationals that were sailing northwest of Cyprus and encountered problems were rescued on Saturday night, in a coordinated operation by the Larnaca joint rescue coordination centre (Jrcc) the defence ministry said on Sunday.

According to an announcement, the Jrcc received a call at around 9.35pm from the US alerting it that a sailboat under the US flag with a two-member crew – Israeli nationals – was in danger because of flooding, 113 nautical miles northwest of Cyprus.

The Jrcc alerted two ships that were close to the sailing-boat, the ALRAR and ARSLAN 1 as well as the Piraeus Jrcc.

The two men were picked up by the cargo ship ARSLAN 1, which also towed their boat to the nearest port.

The Republic’s foreign ministry informed the Embassy of Israel of the incident as well as the relatives of the two men.
