DUI cause of Limassol accidents

TWO motorists involved in separate accidents on Thursday had been driving under the influence of alcohol, police said on Friday.

“At around 11 pm (Thursday), a car driven by a 26-year-old man on Franklin Roosevelt street in Limassol, under conditions that are still being investigated, collided with a light truck driven by a 39-year-old man, who then fled the scene of the accident,” police said.

“Traffic police later spotted and stopped the 39-year old who was submitted to a preliminary alcohol test, with the resultant indication reading 89mg% instead of the legal limit of 22mg%. It was also found that he was driving on a learner’s licence with no accompanying driver, and no insurance certificate.”

The man was arrested, while the driver of the other vehicle also underwent a breathalyser test with a reading of zero. No one was injured in the accident.

Police said alcohol was also the reason of another accident in the coastal town on Thursday afternoon.

“At around 2.30 pm (on Thursday) a 58-year-old woman who was driving on Grivas Digenis avenue in Limassol, under conditions being investigated, at some point lost control of her vehicle, causing it to mount the pavement and hit a small metal pole. Subsequently, the car entered a private parking area, hitting a metal EAC box, before coming to a standstill.”

Police said that officers who arrived at the scene subjected the woman to a preliminary breathalyser which indicated a 115mg% reading, while a subsequent test gave a final 86mg%. The woman was arrested and detained to facilitate inquiries.
