Delinquency in schools survey planned

THE House education committee approved on Wednesday a survey of school students the result of which would help draft policy against delinquency in schools.

The head of the committee, Kyriacos Hadjiyiannis, said that the strategy would be based on the findings of this survey on student’s feelings and concerns.

“For a comprehensive policy, we must use as base, children’s way of thinking,” Hadjiyiannis said. The education ministry has already presented a number of measures to prevent and control delinquency-related incidents in schools, but minister Costas Kadis acknowledged that further measures were necessary.

The House education committee registered the issue for discussion, following the arrest last month of three 16-year-old girls in connection with the beating up of another female student in a Limassol school over personal differences.

A bill on delinquency is also pending. After being discussed in parliament, it is currently at the justice ministry.
