Renovated Apostolos Andreas chapel to be unveiled on Monday

Despite difficulties, the renovated Apostolos Andreas chapel in Karpasia will be unveiled on Monday, head of the bicommunal committee for cultural heritage Takis Hadjidemetriou said on Saturday.

According to local daily Phileleftheros, Hadjidemetriou said that the renovation was the result of cooperation between a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot contractor.

The chapel had been found in dire need of restoration as far back as 1997, and a subsequent agreement for restoration work

was never undertaken due to technical disagreements on the nature of the restoration needs.
In 2007, another effort was made at restoring the church by the chapel’s administrative committee, in collaboration with the Patras University department of architecture, which visited the chapel repeatedly and recorded the restoration needs.

An issue still outstanding with regard to the operation of the chapel is the presence of street vendors in the vicinity of the church.

In the past, they had been asked to move their businesses to a nearby area, but they had refused.

Although the decision that they should move has already been made, its implementation remains outstanding.
