Rocking the Nicosia and Napa stage

Christos Dantis, the Greek singer with the very rock persona, will be crossing the pond over to our side for two performances this week.

Fans of Dantis will know that he is much more than a singer with a very unique voice, he is also a songwriter, a lyricist and a record producer. He is best known for his songs To Palio Mou Palto (My Old Coat) and Ena Tragoudi Akoma (One More Song) – and although he has a very rock image, these hits are ballads that have set the precedent for a number of Greek writers and singers.

Dantis, who will perform in Nicosia on Friday and in Ayia Napa on Saturday, shot to the top of his artistic game after the song he composed and co-wrote, My Number One, won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005.

But fame and hard-core songs weren’t always Dantis’ trademark. He tried performing in a number of bands that played anything from rock, funk, soul, R&B and metal. It was probably all this mixing of sounds that got Dantis to choose quickly what suited his style and voice best. This best drew the attention of Greek singers Tania Tsanaklidou and Dimitra Galani in 1986, when they were looking for new talent to perform on stage with them, and the rest as they say is history.
