A philosopher’s memoirs

During the Month of the German Language, the Technopolis 20 Cultural Centre in Paphos will screen a number of German films. The first will be Lou Andreas-Salome (In Love with Lou – A Philosopher’s Life), on Thursday.

Lou Andreas-Salome, which is 2016 biographical film by Cordula Kablitz, will be presented by the Austrian Embassy. Set in 1933, legendary writer and psychoanalyst Lou Andreas-Salome is leading a lonely existence in Gottingen, which is threatened by the Nazi regime.

When 40-year-old German philologist Ernst Pfeiffer enters her life, they begin to write her memoirs together.

The story of her life begins in 1861 in St. Petersburg. Growing up she vows never to fall in love and to pursue intellectual perfection.

She meets Paul Ree and Friedrich Nietzsche and against all conventions of time, Lou and Ree live and study together in Berlin. Lou attains her goal of an intellectual and free spirited life, but when she meets the young and still unknown writer Rainer Maria Rilke she falls in love, but the romance does not last and after the breakup, she has numerous affairs.

Lou begins to attend Sigmund Freud’s lectures, becomes a well-esteemed psychoanalyst and finally recognises the trauma of her youth.
