Painting letters green

The Chiaki Kamikawa Contemporary Art Gallery in Paphos continues to present the solo exhibition entitled Artist Books by Danish artist Ditte Lyngkaer until November 11.

Pedersen is a multi-disciplinary artist and her work examines the various ways in which we understand our identity and make sense of our surroundings. Her practice often revisits themes from science and theories of perception.

This exhibition presents Pedersen’s latest and ongoing projects; Why is Green a Red Word?, Laughter, and Vagina Eating Husband, which deal with issues concerning synesthesia, happiness and reproduction. Each project contains a time-based element, such as a video or a sound piece and a book of art work.

Why is Green a Red Word? is an artistic research project on the neurological phenomenon called synesthesia – which is an unusual blending of the senses, for example, when letters and numbers are perceived as colours. The extensive video work shown in the exhibition examines the different forms of synesthesia.

Laughter is a series of photographs that attempt to reconstruct a photograph of five young people taken in Tokyo in 1956. A sound piece based on a long-term letter exchange from 2010-2014 between the artist and the owner of the photograph – who is an elderly woman in Tokyo – accompanies the photographs.

Vagina Eating Husband is Pedersen’s latest work. It is a short story concerning pregnancy, reproduction and parenthood in a grotesque and mythological way. It consists of a video work and a book of drawings.

Pedersen is currently based in Aarhus in Denmark and she holds an MFA from Malmo Art Academy in Sweden.
