Plan for Kallipoleos Avenue announced

Nicosia’s Kallipoleos Avenue is to be improved with a new reconstruction plan, a public works department, the Nicosia municipality and the town planning department statement said on Tuesday, as part of the Nicosia Integrated Mobility Master Plan.

According to the statement, Kallipoleos’ reconstruction is a crucial part of the government and local government’s effort to implement the master plan, which marks the beginning of a long-term sustainable effort to improve urban mobility through the increased use of mass transportation, road safety, convenience and safety for pedestrians, and improved quality of urban life.

Funding of €5.2 million from the ministry’s transport budget has been earmarked for the project, as part of the new funding period of Structural Funds 2014-2020.

The statement added that the Nicosia municipality has commissioned a study for the project’s planning, currently at the legally-prescribed review process, following which the works department will invite tenders for construction work.

According to the master plan, Kallipoleos is scheduled to be turned into a two-lane outlet for traffic heading out of Nicosia with the south end of Makarios avenue becoming a massive track for incoming traffic.
