That which comes from the heart

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will present a programme with works by Bruckner, Christodoulos Georgiades and Schubert during two performances this week. Under the baton of Alkis Baltas and with soloist Christodoulou Georgiades, who will perform the premier of his piano concert no.2, the orchestra will perform in Limassol on Wednesday and in Nicosia on Thursday.

Commenting on his Piano concerto no. 1, Cypriot composer and pianist Georgiades said it “flows from the heart…not the brain.” So anyone who has heard the composer’s first instalment, will look forward to finding out if this second piece also plays with the heart strings and touches our emotional notes.

The phrase ‘from the heart’ could also apply to Bruckner’s Three Pieces for Orchestra which will be the starting point for the orchestra’s programme. Bruckner’s piece concentrates on three charming, melodious movements. The main characteristics of these three pieces is what make them of such interest, as it is in these pieces that the composer brings to the public eye, for the first time, pure and absolute orchestral music. It is this kind of music that Bruckner then made his life’s work.

As for Schubert’s Symphony no. 2, which brings the programme to a close, this was composed between 1814 and 1815, with the opening movement’s initial theme based on Beethoven’s overture to The Creatures of Prometheus – which is said to show Beethoven exploiting instruments and coloristic orchestral effects that would never appear in his symphonies or serious dramatic overtures – and the second movement being Schubert’s only set of symphonic variations.
