Mystery icons left outside cemetery

Limassol police on Saturday were trying to determine the origin of eight contemporary religious icons and two paintings placed on the perimeter wall of the Kato Polemidia cemetery.

Police have contacted the district’s bishopric, after its stamp was found at the back of one of the icons, but they were told that no reports of theft had been made.

CID chief Ioannis Soteriades said the icons, which depicted various saints, belonged to a church iconostasis. A small one was silver-plated.

“So far we have no sign as to their origin,” he said. Soteriades did not rule out them having been stolen from a home or some remote chapel that was not visited very often.

The artwork is not of high monetary value.
