Game launched to teach internet safety

An online game aiming to educate pupils across Cyprus on issues of online safety and proper use of the internet, created by MTN with the contribution of computer science teachers, psychologists and the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, was presented on Tuesday by the mobile-service provider and the education ministry.

The game, called iWhiz, is a source of knowledge and information, as well as a pleasant occupation for pupils since it is an interactive question-and-answer game in which pupils challenge each other in various tests.

“Pupils can play between them individually, tallying points for their own score, or as a team, tallying points for their school,” a statement said.

“At the end of each contest, the three top schools will win 8 Alcatel tablets, while the three top pupils will win an iPad mini2 each.”

The categories in which the pupils will compete are internet safety (50 per cent), technology and information knowledge (35 per cent), and general knowledge (15 per cent).

The game is available on android and iOS machines and eligible pupils should be between 12 and 16.

“The creation of the online interactive game iWhiz is particularly important, as it aims at the education of pupils on matters of internet safety,” Education Minister Costas Kadis said.

“The education ministry’s priority is to offer all pupils the opportunity to access new technologies and the internet, as well as prepare them to face the risks that may come up while using it.”

The game will be presented in schools across Cyprus by Cypriot actor Andreas Fylaktou, whom MTN has appointed ambassador of iWhiz.

iWhiz is available at the Play store and the Apple store
