From Instagram to gallery walls

Photographs taken by mobile phones and being passed around on social media may lose some of their artistic value, but once you transfer them onto the walls of a gallery, they are right back in the artistic light.

Those taken by Andreas Efstathiou and uploaded onto his Instagram account will be presented at isnotgallery in Nicosia on Friday.

These photographs, which are under the collective name instantane, give us a look into the way in which we communicate in the 21st century, how Efstathiou sees the world around him, and how everyday images can become works of art.

Among the photographs on display, you will see a crowded beach, a look inside a modern toy store, and traditional toy stands at a fair. These may sound like pictures that we have all been faced with, but in the right light, from the right angle, and caught by the artistic eye, these pictures do what pictures have always done, tell a great story.
