The downfall of a famous city

The emotional play My Beloved Smirni by the Greek actress Mimi Ntenisi, already seen by 300,000 people in Greece, is coming our way next month.
As the tickets are already on sale and are going quickly, it could be a good idea to book your seats way in advance.

The theatrical piece, being brought to us by OPAP Cyrus and Alphamega supermarkets, will be set on the Strovolos stage to raise funds for the Cyprus Red Cross.

As the title suggests, the play concerns itself with the historic memories of the times when Greek people lived in the city, while playing with nostalgia through images of the crowded neighbourhoods and landscapes of the time. These authentic images will be presented as 3D pictures at the back of the stage, while live music will be playing, and the costumes and props will suit the period.

Ntenisi wrote the play about Smirni after many years of research. The play covers the city’s most historic period, from 1917 right up until the time when Greek people were forced to leave in 1923.

The history of the city is brought to life through the story of a family. Through the goings on of this family, the audience gets to know the many different cultures and people that lived in the city, the different music and cuisines that went along with the times, and how these differences were not seen as such. Rather, the people wove them together and learned from each other. While the characters’ stories give us a guided tour of the city, the political aspirations and the conflicting interests that led to the downfall of the famous city also become part of the story.

Tickets can be purchased from all Alphamega supermarkets
