Kyrenia restaurant employee shot in foot

Police in Kyrenia are investigating a shooting attack on a restaurant Wednesday night in which an employee was injured.

Five shots were fired during the incident at the popular Beyti restaurant at 11.20 pm, one of which hit Turan Onser in the leg. None of the other thirty or so customers or staff present were injured.

Owner Mehmet Okumus told reporters at the scene that he had received threats from what he described as extortion racketeers some eight months ago and called on police to do something about the situation.

Four men were arrested last November in connection with an assault Okumus suffered outside his premises in which he sustained a broken nose.

He previously complained that gangs had demanded up to half the takings of the eatery.
