August speed campaign nets thousands

Almost two and a half thousand motorists were caught speeding in the first week of August, according to figures released Tuesday by the police.

In an anti-speeding campaign, the fourth carried out this year, traffic departments of all cities and headquarters police managed to bust 2,491 people for breaking the limit between August 1 and 7.

Headquarters traffic cops working in various locations, booked a total of 629 people. Nicosia district officers booked 492, followed by Paphos with 420, Larnaca with 412, Limassol with 359, Famagusta with 128 and Morphou with 41.

Police said “it is an indisputable fact that speeding is one of the main causes of fatal and serious road traffic collisions, which is why the police is focusing its efforts in this direction.”
