The call of motherhood

The Rialto theatre in Limassol will complete its summer cinema season on Tuesday with a screening of the 2015 Chilean drama La Vida Sexual De Las Plantas (Sex Life of Plants).

The film, directed by Sebastian Brahm, has been called a “deceptively simple, human story about a woman’s right to decide the use of her body,” by the Hollywood Reporter. It tells the story of landscape architect Barbara who is madly in love with Guillermo – with whom she wants to have a child.

The pair go off on a plant-gathering trip together and while there Guillermo suffers a head injury that leaves him with cognitive disabilities. Realising the man she’s in love with is now damaged, and with her biological clock ticking, Barbara seeks a new partner in Nils. Nils is in his forties, has no children and he asks her to move in with him. This seems to be the perfect set-up but there is only one problem, Barbara is haunted by the memory of her lost love.
