Next week the scene is set for music in Paphos when the Technopolis 20 cultural centre will host a night fit for jazz in the garden as well as a night with a master at the piano.
Starting off with jazz, the musical band Project Jazz will be filling the Technopolis 20 garden with a whole bouquet of jazzy tunes on Wednesday.
The three young musicians of Project Jazz – Spyros Socratous on double bass, Agapios Kakogiannis on the trombone and Nikolas Tsaggaris on the drums – will present some of the greatest jazz hits of all time written by some of the best musicians the world has ever known, including Miles Davis, Ron Carter and George Gershwin.
For two whole hours the boys will get us in a jazzy mood with these well-known jazz hits, as well as a few improvisations.
After a night of jazz, the cultural centre will present Russian pianist Andrey Bugrinov on Thursday.
Bugrinov, who is currently on tour, will perform works by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, Russian composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninov, German composer Johannes Brahms and Russian composer and conductor Sergei Prokofiev.
Bugrinov studied at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, where he received the Aspirantura postgraduate diploma which is given to only two students among all graduate students in the piano department in each year.
During his student life he was a prize-winner at several international competitions including Domenico Cimarosa International Piano Competition (1990, Aversa, Italy), Sergei Rachmaninov International Piano Competition (1990, Morcone, Italy) and Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition (1992, Bolzano, Italy).
As a solo pianist he has been invited by several countries to give performances. These include Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, USA, South Africa, and South Korea. He has also performed with the St. Petersburg Symphonic Orchestra and with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra on many occasions. At both orchestras, Bugrinov was conducted by internationally famous conductors.
A highlight of his career was when – in 2007 – he was invited as a piano professor to perform and give masterclasses by Cheongju University and Chungju National University in South Korea.
The pianist is currently associate professor of piano at Saint-Petersburg State Pedagogical University of Gerzen in Russia and, since November 2015, he has been the dean of the piano department at Harbin Conservatory.
So, if you are a music lover – be it jazz or classical piano music – Paphos has a lot to offer anyone who is looking for cultural entertainment.
