New fire in Sina Oros said to be under control (Update 2)

A new fire broke out in the Sina Oros area on Sunday afternoon, CNA reported, but it was brought under control around two hours later, reports said.

The area was one of those affected by last week’s five-day inferno in the Solea region.

A fire service spokesman told CNA that firefighters from his department and from the forestry department had been called to the scene with three helicopters and a plane.

Work was hampered by strong winds and high temperatures.

Fires that broke out in the region last Sunday took five days to bring under control and resulted in the deaths of two firefighters.

Interior Minister Socratis Hasikos told CNA earlier that the fire was “manageable” and that the situation was under control.
Firefighters are due to remain in the area in case there is any re-ignition.
