Woman dies after being rescued from the sea off Governor’s beach  

A 66-year-old woman from Pano Lefkara became the latest apparent drowning victim on Thursday after she had gone for a swim at Governor’s Beach, Limassol.

According to reports, bathers spotted Ioulia Evangelou floating in the sea shortly before 5pm.

The police from the Moni station were summoned and brought the woman ashore aided by a civilian.

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reports that police administered first aid and managed to resuscitate Evangelou. She was rushed to Limassol general hospital, but she died there shortly after despite doctors’ best efforts.

A post mortem will be held to determine the precise cause of death.

CNA reports that although the spot on the beach has a lifeguard tower, it was unmanned at the time. The tower was expected to be manned as of July 1.
