Man to remain in custody until trial after attack with meat cleavers

Limassol district court on Tuesday ordered that a 35-year old man, charged with aggravated assault and causing serious bodily harm, remain in police custody until his trial on June 6.

The 35-year-old, a Greek national, is suspected of injuring the father of his employer during a melee at a hotel in the Troodos area.

According to police, the incident took place on Monday morning, when the suspect got into a heated argument with his employer, the 32-year-old owner of a hotel.

The hotel owner’s father, 56, tried to step in to prevent the argument from turning violent. At one point the suspect grabbed two meat cleavers and slashed at the father’s throat.

The 32-year-old disarmed the suspect after striking him with a chair.

The suspect was arrested by police officers arriving on the scene. The 56-year-old was taken to Kyperounda hospital, where doctors stitched up his wound. The man was later discharged from hospital.

The suspect is facing charges of causing serious bodily harm, causing injury, wielding a sharp object, and malicious destruction of property.
