New House Speaker to be decided on June 2

The new House Speaker will be decided on June 2 by the newly-elected MPs after they convene to form the new legislative body, the secretary general of the parliament, Vasiliki Anastasiadou said on Monday.

Anastasiadou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that in the case there is more than one candidates to replace the outgoing House speaker Yiannakis Omirou, there will be a vote.

She added that parliamentary services were preparing to welcome the newly-elected speaker and that construction taking place at the entrance of the House building to upgrade security, will be completed by June 2.

According to the Constitution, the first meeting of the new legislative body should take place the latest 15 days after the elections.

DIKO newly-elected deputy Christiana Erotokritou said on Monday that the party’s chairman and elected MP Nicolas Papadopoulos, was not seeking the position.
