Candidatures for parliamentary elections to be submitted on Wednesday

Aspiring MPs submit on Wednesday their candidatures ahead of parliamentary elections, to be held on May 22, in the Republic of Cyprus.

The process will take place in all District Offices, with the exception of Nicosia, where candidate MPs will submit their candidature to the Returning Officer at the “Filoxenia” conference center. For the district of Kyrenia, candidates must refer to the Returning Officer, based at the Interior Ministry, in Nicosia.

A decree by the Interior Minister will follow on Friday, May 6, detailing the distribution of polling stations and later, on May 13, the allocation of voters in polling stations will be announced.

According to the Interior Ministry, candidatures are either party-affiliated or independent and are submitted with the backing of four electors. The House is made up of 56 Mps.

Candidates to represent the religious groups of Maronites, Armenians and Latins will also submit to the Returning Officer their candidatures on Wednesday, in Nicosia.

Each religious group is represented in the House by one representative, who is elected among votes of his/her respective group.

Voters will cast their votes at approximately 1,200 polling stations in Cyprus and abroad.
