President Anastasiades hopes obstacles will be overcome for a solution in 2016

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has expressed the conviction that with cooperation any obstacles can be overcome so that 2016 will be the last year of the Cyprus problem.

In a televised Easter Message on Saturday, President Anastasiades said a message of hope is projected by the great Holiday of the Resurrection itself, “but which also results from the work that we have accomplished as a society and as a state both for the reorganization of our country and for the solution to our national problem”.

After three difficult years, the President remarked, “we can now stand on our own power with confidence, without the support of the Troika and without a memorandum on financial assistance.”

It is, however, also true, “that we still have a lot to do, because we may have succeeded in terminating the guardianship by our lenders but the repercussions of the crisis faced by the vulnerable groups are real. It is to them that we turn our thoughts as well, especially during these holy days”.

The message of the Resurrection, he said, “fills us also with feelings of anticipation and strengthens our persistence for the great effort we have been making during the last year for the solution to the Cyprus problem, searching for a solution that will be viable, functional and will open up prospects for a peaceful future for all the citizens of our country, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins.”

President Anastasiades said “we are working with persistence and self-confidence for a solution that will be based on the High Level Agreements, the resolutions of the United Nations, the principles and values of the European Union; A solution that will be grounded on the unanimous agreements of the National Council of 2009 and will serve the interests of the people of Cyprus in their entirety.”

“I want to believe that with everybody’s cooperation we can bend and surpass any obstacles so that the year 2016 will be the last year of a painful calamity that has lasted for 42 years now”, the President concluded.
