Suspect in drugs case agrees to US extradition

A 36-year-old man sought by US authorities on an international arrest warrant for possession of six kilos of drugs and caught in Cyprus, was remanded for six days at Limassol District court on Friday.

US authorities wanted the man in connection with a case where he allegedly had 1,000 kilos of marihuana and five kilos of cocaine.

Limassol CID chief Ioannis Sotiriades said police had been monitoring the suspect after an alert from the US authorities.

They found his passport was fake and had been illegally staying on the island since September last year. Additionally, officers found a number of mobile phones.

The suspect admitted he was the person the US was looking for yet maintained his innocence and said he was willing to be extradited back.

Police will be filing the case to the Attorney-general who will decide where he will be tried.
