Anastasiades says progress made in talks

President Nicos Anastasiades said on Tuesday that progress has been made in the settlement talks after a meeting in the evening with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

The two leaders met at the UN’s Good Offices under the auspices of the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General (SASG) on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, and the Deputy SASG, Lisa Buttenheim.

At the meeting, the first held in April, the two leaders discussed government and property.

“I believe it was a good meeting today. Progress has been made and this is satisfactory,” Anastasiades said.

He added that some convergences have been made.

Commenting on the arrival on the island of US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Victoria Nuland, who was expected to arrive late on Tuesday, and whether the international community would like to see the momentum not lost, he said that what the Greek Cypriot side wants is “not the momentum, but the solution”.

He added that the aim is “a solution which answers to the concerns of the Greek Cypriots but also does not ignore those of the Turkish Cypriots. The concerns of one side must not affect the rights of the other”.
