Choc cookies withdrawn after casein find

A brand of chocolate biscuits made in Denmark was found to contain casein, a protein found in mammalian milk, which the product’s label did not list, the Health ministry announced on Friday.

In a statement, the ministry said that casein could cause health problems to those allergic or intolerant to milk.

The biscuits in question appear to have been made in Denmark and are marketed under the name ‘Disney Chokolate Chip Cookies’ in a metal box of 150 grams.

The product is made by Jacobsens Bakery Ltd and were distributed in Greece by Jumbo stores.

Greek authorities, the statement said, have requested the immediate recall of the product, and compliance inspections are ongoing.

Cypriot health services found that the biscuits in question are also sold in Cyprus, but have been informed that the local distributors have already withdrawn them after being informed of the issue by the Greek distributor.

However, the health ministry added, since some of the biscuits may already have been sold, lactose-intolerant individuals are urged not to consume them.
