President expresses support to Greece’s efforts to exit recession and address the refugee crisis

President Nicos Anastasiades on Friday expressed Cyprus` support for Greece`s efforts to exit its deep economic slump, and in addressing its refugee crisis.

During a reception hosted by Greek Ambassador Elias Photopoulos at his residence in Nicosia on the occasion of the Greek Independence Day, Anastasiades said: “We are looking forward to Greece taking advantage of its real financial potential.”

“I express our support for the immense effort which the Greek government, the politicians and the people have been making during the last few years, to exit the deep economic crisis from which the Greek people are suffering,” he added.

Anastasiades also expressed Cyprus’ support for the struggle of the Greek government to address the refugee crisis, and for solidarity in Europe. Greece and Cyprus were closely cooperating in Brussels, he added.

Greece, he said was in the “eye of the storm” on the migrant issue and that Athens and some other EU countries were in need of immediate support. “It is evident that the activation of the Civil Protection Mechanism is not enough for the management of this acute problem,” he added.

Anastasiades said a comprehensive coherent political proposal to solve the crisis was needed in Europe.
He thanked Greece for its continuing support for Cyprus.

Earlier Anastasiades attended a religious service in Nicosia to commemorate Greek Independence Day. In statements to the press afterwards he expressed the for “a just, viable and functional settlement” in Cyprus.

Lessons must be learned from history, he added, “both from the successes achieved through unity and the failures which were the result of discord”.
