New collective agreement for hotel workers

Representatives of hotel workers’ unions and hoteliers’ associations signed the new 2016-2018 collective agreement in the presence of Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou on Monday.

The agreement comes after threats earlier in the year by hotel employees for strikes in all those hotels where employers did not restore the slashed benefits agreed in 2013 due to the economic crisis. Unions, who had signed a collective agreement with employers in 2013 that provided for a 15 per cent cut in workers’ overall benefits, were demanding increases in benefits in equal measure after the agreement expired on December 31, 2015.

Workers who were due to go on strike at a number of hotels had called it off after an intervention of Emilianidou. Following consultations with her personal involvement, the collective agreement was renewed.
