With eyes shut

Poets often write poems about poetry and artists often write about the process of making art. The play Sight Unseen by Donald Margulies brings the artists and his inspiration to the forefront.

After performances in Nicosia, the production company Alpha Square is taking Sight Unseen to Limassol for one performance on Wednesday.

Jonathan Waxman is a very wealthy and critically acclaimed American artist who is happily married with a pregnant wife. His art work is so popular that they are bought on a sight-unseen basis as the buyer is sure to purchase a masterpiece.

Waxman recently lost his father and is struggling with self-doubt and to find inspiration. He travels to London to reminisce about the work he has done so far. On impulse while there he decides to go to the countryside and visit his former model and lover Patricia, who is living with her much older husband.

Patricia is not the only woman he meets while in England, he also meets a young German scholar Grete.

The play goes back and forth through time, showing us how the relationship between Patricia and Waxman began and how it came to its end.

The play premiered at South Coast Repertory in 1991, and then was produced Off-Broadway in 1992 and on Broadway in 2004.
