“I deserve to be hanged for the mistake I did,” the 80-year-old man who shot his wife in Pervolia earlier this month told Larnaca district court on Friday.

Yiangos Katsaris had been asked if he had any objections to the police request that he remain in custody until April 20, where his case will be heard in the criminal court.

The man faces charges of manslaughter for killing his 77-year-old estranged wife Zoe Katsaris, on March 3 at his farmhouse in Kokkines, Pervolia, where she lived with a domestic worker.

The couple were separated for the past two years and on the day of the incident had a row over financial affairs. The suspect drew out a revolver shooting his wife five times.

Their son, who had been at the farmhouse, notified police while the domestic worker is a key witness. She had heard the couple arguing outside the house and heard shooting.

Running outside she saw the victim lying on the ground and the 80-year-old standing over her with the gun.

She told police she saw him shoot another two times.

Officers who arrived at the scene saw Katsaris lying dead outside the gate of the home with her husband next to her, their son, who had taken the revolver and the domestic worker.
