Old people’s home in Larnaca evacuated due to fire

Two elderly people were taken to Larnaca hospital on Wednesday evening with respiratory problems after fire broke out in the nursing home where they live in Oroklini.

Due to the fire, which broke out at around 5.45pm on the building’s third floor, five of the 42 residents had to be rescued by the fire services.

Five fire engines were called to put out the blaze. The third floor was sealed off. Investigations are to begin first thing on Thursday.

The building, according to the Cyprus News Agency, is owned by Larnaca businessman Antonis Fanieros, who on Wednesday was denied the right to expunge his criminal record so that he could stand in the parliamentary election in May.

The condition of the two elderly people who were transferred to hospital, is not serious.
