Hotel workers reject compromise agreement

A union representing hotel employees on Monday gave a resounding ‘no’ to a compromise agreement Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou offered in a bid to avert strikes in the industry.
The dispute between unions and hoteliers stems from collective agreements signed in 2013 providing a 15 per cent cut in benefits. Now expired, employees want their benefits reinstated.
After an extraordinary session on Monday, DEOK union general secretary Diomides Diomidous said the agreement “bore no consideration for over 80 per cent of hotel employees who live on contracts and on €600 to €700 salaries.”
Calling the agreement “the worse thing which could stem from negotiations”, DEOK said it did not deem it necessary at the moment to discuss it with other unions.
