Britain seeks extradition order

Larnaca district court was on Monday considering an extradition order for a 50-year-old man to the UK after he came to Cyprus while he was out of prison on condition he did not travel abroad.
Antonis Antoniou, from Ora village in Larnaca was sentenced in 2005 by Nottingham criminal court to a life sentence (14 years) for manslaughter after he stabbed an Irish man to death after accusing him of sexually assaulting a relative, according to reports.
After seven years, he was released from prison under certain conditions including not leaving the country.
The court heard that three years ago he left the UK and came to Ora, his mother’s village, where he has been living ever since.
He told the court he was in Cyprus to sell his mother’s home who for the past few years has been in a home.
During Monday’s court session, Antoniou reportedly ‘couldn’t remember the British passport’ he was shown a photocopy of but only his ID.
He did not consent to going to the UK of his own accord and requested the case is postponed until he assigns himself a lawyer.
The case will resume on Thursday, while Antoniou will remain in the Nicosia central prisons until then.
