Footballers sent for trial after match attack

TWO footballers, aged 29 and 33, were referred to trial by the Larnaca district court on Monday for allegedly beating up a 29-year-old player of the team they were playing against on Sunday.

The two men, players of Troulloi’s local team, were arrested on Sunday after the 29-year-old, who plays for Ethnikos Tersefanou, reported that they attacked and beaten him badly after the end of the match at the Troulloi community stadium. The alleged attackers’ team had won the match with 3-2.

The 29-year-old reported to the Athienou police station that the two attacked him, and started kicking him on the left ear, ribs and legs.

Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said that the two suspects were brought before court on Monday and were referred to trial. The two men, who pleaded not guilty, were released on bail until the trial, set for June 17.
