Dust risk warning

THE Labour Inspection Department on Friday warned the public, especially vulnerable groups to stay indoors as much as possible due to an increase of dust in the atmosphere.

At 7pm, the average hourly concentrations of respirable particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 10mm (PM 10) in the atmosphere increased to 205.3mg/m3 (micrograms per cubic metre) in Limassol, 189.9mg/m3 in Larnaca and 67.2mg/m3 in Nicosia, exceeding the safe limit of 50mg/m3. Results for Paphos were not available.

“Due to the small size of respirable particulate matter and its potential negative impact on human health, the public and particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and patients, are advised to avoid the open air until the dust has subsided,” the department said.
