Suspect arrested in car scam worth €143,000

Limassol police on Wednesday arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of deceiving a number of people into giving him money for luxury cars that were supposedly going to be bought from the UK.

Police said they had received a number of complaints from people who allegedly paid the man – between May 2015 and January 2016 — some €143,000 in down-payment for cars that would have been bought in the UK.

Police issued an arrest warrant for the 26-year-old who was found at the Athalassa psychiatric hospital in Nicosia where he was being treated for the past few days.

Following permission from the doctors, police arrested the suspect.

Police said he admitted to being involved in the case. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the number of people duped will increase.
