Late strikes leave Apollon in pole position in Cyprus Cup, APOEL held

Apollon are in a good position to advance to the semi-finals of the Cyprus Cup after a 2-0 win in Limassol over fierce local rivals AEL on Wednesday in the first leg of their last-eight clash.

Apollon left it late though, with Abraham Guie opening the scoring after 81 minutes. Simeon Slavchev doubled their advantage two minutes later, leaving AEL with a lot of work to do if they are to overturn their deficit in the return leg.

Wednesday’s second quarter-final saw holders APOEL held 1-1 by Aris in Nicosia. Randy opened the scoring for the visitors in the 15th minute, but their joy was short-lived as APOEL hit back just three minutes later through a Fernando Cavenaghi penalty, leaving the tie evenly balanced.
