Going for extremes

By Maria Gregoriou

Tomorrow, if you are in the mood for the theatre, Theatro Ena in Limassol will begin performances of the play Extremities by William Mastrosimone.

The play shows scenes of violence and touches on some very troubling subjects, so it is not for the light-hearted.

A young woman, Marjorie, is attacked in her home by Raul, who has every intention of raping her. But Marjorie turns the tables on him, and manages to tie him up in her fireplace. Her roommates come home to discover the attacker bound with cords, belts and other household items.

Terri and Patricia, the roommates, express different points of view about rape in society. Terri, a rape victim herself as a teenager, believes that Raul will not be convicted since a rape did not actually occur and there is no proof. Patricia believes in the judicial system and insists on calling the police.

During this discussion the three friends also turn on each other due to Raul’s knowledge of each of them through stalking them. One such instance when the female characters turn their attention away from the would-be rape is when Raul reveals to Terri that Marjorie had been having an affair with her boyfriend.

The off-Broadway play opened at the Westside Theatre in New York in 1982 and ran for 325 performances.

The play will be performed until February 26 on specific days.
