Couple suspected of stealing close to €500,000 from safety deposit boxes

A Larnaca couple were on Thursday arrested on suspicion of stealing close to half a million euro from a number of bank safety deposit boxes.

The husband and wife were on Friday expected to appear before a court where police will ask they be remanded in custody.

The couple are suspected of stealing in total €470,000 from safety deposit boxes of Bank of Cyprus and a cooperative bank’s branch.

The complaints to police were lodged by eight owners of safety deposit boxes. The alleged crimes were committed from March 17 last year to the present day.

In addition, jewellery worth some €10,000 is alleged to have been stolen from the same safety deposit boxes.
Acting on a warrant, police searched the home, vehicles and safety deposit boxes owned by the couple.

Inside the couple’s home, police found €76,000 in cash and a quantity of jewellery.
